Will I be able to see where the patch was?
Not if I did my job. Feathered edges, matched texture, and primer before paint make a good patch invisible.
There is a water stain on my ceiling. Can you just paint over it?
Painting straight over a water stain almost always fails, it bleeds through. I seal stains with a proper stain-blocking primer first, then paint. Fix the leak first though, and I mean that.
